23+ Years of Strengthening
Health Systems
Formerly known as the Axios Foundation, Akesis was born in 2000 from the pioneering efforts of its founders in implementing one of the first antiretroviral (ARV) treatment programs in Africa.
Over the last 23 years, we have worked with public and private sector stakeholders to strengthen health systems and access to healthcare in more than 35 countries around the world – expanding from HIV/AIDS to other critical public health areas including malaria, family planning, cancer and vaccines.
In 2020, the Axios Foundation was renamed Akesis in celebration of its 20th anniversary and its renewed commitment to sustainable health system strengthening solutions.
Today, Akesis continues to break new ground as it works to advance a new generation of responsive health system strengthening services in parts of the world where it is needed most.
Our Approach
To support the development of health systems that are responsive to the ever-changing healthcare landscape, we take a unique approach that prioritizes both systems and people to enable quality, reliable service delivery for more sustainable outcomes.
We can’t rely on systems alone. Healthcare is a service and people are a critical component of how that service is delivered to enable optimum outcomes. Named after the Greek god of healing, Akesis believes in strengthening existing infrastructure, systems and human resources in close collaboration with those who will ultimately benefit from these efforts.
